Watching Hummingbirds
Like many of you, we have a hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds are wonderful to watch - entertaining and fascinating. The wings of hummingbirds are rarely at rest. They constantly feed due to the energy required to sustain life. These are amazing creatures. Though some remain in the southern United States during the winter, most fly to Mexico or Central America. When Spring begins in North America, they head back.
Like all birds, they have wings and are able to fly (as most birds are). But hummingbirds have the ability to move quickly, and stop and hover just as quickly. I call them "God's little drones." No other bird or winged creature moves in such a way. For example, geese usually fly in a straight pattern and often in a flock; and bats (though not birds) fly in quickly changing patterns, but they lack the ability to hover as hummingbirds do.
Like all of creation, hummingbirds in their uniqueness point us to our Creator (Genesis chapter 1; Acts 17:24-25; Colossians 1:16), and the beauty of creation showcases His power and creativity (Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20)!
Observing hummingbirds and all animals should point us to a creative, intelligent Designer who has a purpose for everything in His creation. In Job 12:7-10, the Bible tells us that animals can teach us. They constantly rely upon resources from their Creator. They are designed for a specific and special purpose. They glorify their Creator by being what He intended for them to be. We would do well to learn from them.
God is a God of design and order. You are His creation. You are not here by accident, or by chance. A holy, all-powerful God gave you life. What an amazing gift! Like the animals referenced above, you are a creation of God; but unlike the animals you can enjoy fellowship with God through His Son Jesus Christ and eternal life offered through Him. There is nothing better than finding the purpose for which God created you. He loves you. It is amazing how many people have no idea that God loves them. They think of God as anything other than loving. God is blamed for so many things for which human beings are responsible. He is blamed, shunned, blasphemed and ignored. But none of that changes His existence, or His love for you.
God specially designed you for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11), and that pleasure is the genuine fellowship available to everyone who will trust His Son as Savior! Hummingbirds are not here by accident. Neither are you. God has a purpose for you. I challenge you to find it. Start with Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9), and get ready for a plan that will take you from this life to eternity with Him (John 3:16)!
